Rosacea
What is rosacea?
Rosacea is a chronic skin problem for which there is currently no definitive cure, but its symptoms can be treated well. Rosacea usually affects the middle part of the face, its most characteristic symptom is skin redness, the severity of which varies from person to person. Most people experience visible and long-lasting redness on the nose, face and chin, which is most similar to a sunburn. You may also experience other symptoms, such as red bumps and visibly bulging veins. Without treatment, rosacea sufferers often experience periods when the redness or texture seems to get worse, known as 'flare-ups'. Flare-ups can be triggered by factors such as extreme temperatures, strong windy weather, eating spicy foods or hot drinks, drinking alcohol, exercising, and changing medications.
What causes rosacea?
The root cause of rosacea is currently unknown , but we know that it is typically hereditary - that is, it is passed down from generation to generation. If a parent suffers from rosacea, it is likely that their child will experience it sooner or later.
Rosacea most often occurs in people between the ages of 30 and 50. Although the underlying cause is unknown, it has been associated with a weak immune system, vascular network, and inflammatory bowel diseases such as celiac disease, Chron's disease, ulcerative colitis, and irritable bowel syndrome. Further research and experiments are necessary, but there has already been a study where the restoration of the health of the gut microbiome also improved the symptoms of rosacea.
